Star-sighting under blinding billboards.
The Toronto International Film Festival 2008 is on now, and I managed to catch a film entitled "Skin" at the AMC Theatres. It is based on a true story about a girl born with black features to white parents in the era of the Apartheid in South Africa.
I was first in the Rush Line and thankfully managed to get in. And when I did, lo and behold the star of the film, Sophie Okonedo, was seated near the entrance! As the director/writer was giving a short intro, I scuttled off to my seat. After the screening, Sophie was introduced to the audience that reciprocated her astounding performance with a standing ovation. I really love her in "Hotel Rwanda" and she does as good as a job here in the role of Sandra Laing. If the film gets a wide release, do watch it, and given enough recognition, I smell an Oscar nomination.
Given the (great movie seats but) unfavourable star photo-taking seats and the resulting fuzzy photos I took during the Q&A, I scanned the exiting crowd for her for a couple more rude close-up snaps. Only when we were out did I see her and quickly swooped in and timidly asked, "Sophie, can we take a picture with you?"
A sweet "Yes" from her gave us this. She is so pretty and tall in person, very soft-spoken too. I was so giddy with joy that I only thanked her for the picture but not her brilliant work(s). What do you expect, her hand was on my shoulder for Pete's sake!
