Cupcake, I'm judging you

I love watching the original Iron Chef and have always wished to be a part of such a competition, either as a taster or a competitor. I got that chance today.

Anya and I were at the lovely neighbourhood of Liberty Village, just to the west of the downtown Lakeshore core, tasting and judging cupcakes from competitors of the monthly IronCupcake contest. Hosted by a custom cake store, For the Love of Cake, the competition began three months ago and it has already generated a pretty impressive turnout. The secret ingredient for May was flowers (the first was beer for St. Patrick's Day and the second was coffee).

This is how it worked... Five bucks gave us a random ballot with two vote categories: Best Taste and Best Display. We each got a bottle of water and a plate with five cupcakes to taste, their numbers corresponding to the numbers listed on our ballot for Best Taste. All fifteen cupcakes of the competition were on a long display table for us to judge. Eating them is self-explanatory, but we did have quite a discussion about how we should tackle the judging. Should we gobble them fully or take bites so that there is a second round to make our final decision with?

My plate minus one (#01-#05, #03 was a no-show).

Anya's plate (#11-#15).

#01 lavender, #02 hibiscus.

#04 lavender, #05 rose and cardamom.

#06 lavender and lilac, #07 cherry blossom.

#09 lilac and daisy, #10 rose.

#11 lavender, #12 hibiscus.

#13 orange blossom, #14 lavender, #15 lavender.

My pick for Best Taste, #02.

My pick for Best Display, #13.

Anya went with #12 for Best Taste and #06 for Best Display. I was too pleased in my tummy by the time the winners were announced so I just clapped and smiled along. The results were tallied and Best Display scores were added to give People's Choice... #01 was the runner-up and #14, I think, won. #11 came in second to #12 for Critics' Choice, so score for Anya! It is a pity IronCupcake will not be held over the summer since the cake store has to deal with wedding cake orders. Oh well, till September!

We walked around Liberty Village finding a way out, then walked along King Street towards Spadina Avenue. Could not ask for a more beautiful sunny day to do that!
